Essential Packing Guide for Kashmir

Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, here's your comprehensive packing list for a comfortable Kashmir trip.

1. Clothing

  • Winter (October to March):
    • Heavy winter jacket: Preferably waterproof and insulated.
    • Thermals: A couple of pairs of thermal tops and bottoms.
    • Sweaters and fleece layers: Layering is key for warmth.
    • Woolen socks and gloves: To keep your extremities warm.
    • Scarf and hat: A warm scarf and woolen or fleece hat are essential.
    • Snow boots: If visiting places like Gulmarg, where there’s snow, waterproof boots with good grip are ideal.
  • Summer (April to September):
    • Light jacket or fleece: Even in summer, evenings can get chilly.
    • Comfortable layers: Light sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, and T-shirts for layering.
    • Comfortable pants: Full-length jeans or trekking pants.
    • Raincoat or umbrella: Summer brings occasional rains, so be prepared.
    • Sneakers or hiking boots: For walking on uneven terrain.

2. Footwear

  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots: Essential for exploring, especially if you’ll be trekking or visiting uneven terrain.
  • Flip-flops or sandals: For indoors or comfortable evening wear.

3. Accessories

  • Sunglasses: To protect from the sun, especially in snowy areas where the glare can be intense.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher): UV rays are stronger at higher altitudes.
  • Lip balm: To prevent chapping, especially in the cold and dry air.
  • Gloves: Insulated gloves for winter trips, or lighter ones for cool evenings.
  • Cap/hat: For sun protection in the summer, or a woolen cap in winter.

4. Travel Documents and Cash

  • ID proof: Passport, driving license, or Aadhaar card.
  • Permits (if required): Certain areas may require permits, so check ahead.
  • Cash: ATMs may not be widely available in remote areas, so it’s helpful to carry cash.
